Documentary Film in Surveillance Society

The Sheffield Film Festival is a showcase of brilliant filmmaking. At the Crossover event, they focus on the future of documentary filmmaking, and offer a selection of impressive interactive documentary films. I was invited to address this audience in the context of my role as Chairman of the Creative Visions Foundation, where more than half of our global projects involve documentary films. I chose as my topic Surveillance Society. I wanted to address the question of what happens to filmmakers in an environment characterized by pervasive surveillance? At the Creative Visions Foundation, our filmmakers have become creative activists. They play a meaningful role in fostering positive social change. For them, the filmmaking process and the film itself contribute to the effort of changing society.
