Vectors of Change in Television and New Media — video of speech from 5D
In October 2008, I was invited to give a talk at the 5D conference in Long Beach, CA. Here’s the clip.
I had a great time at 5D. I met terrific people, including brilliant speakers, visionary designers, committed event organizers and the director of the excellent contemporary art museum. I learned a great deal, and saw some brilliant examples of the future of TV. I’d recommend 5D to anyone who is interested in the future of mass media and digital media. I watched your Blender speech. You get it…90% of the decision makers dont, or wont.
One curious observation/question…You pointed out the fluidity of media – and the current facade’s that exemplifiy a “tired” media model…then why is what I’ve read about OWN reflect that same restrictive concept? I would think that if the content can and is dynamic and respects no boundaries, then wouldnt the same apply to a “Network”? ie; the audience/viewsers become/are the ” programming directors, and the unique “access to, or enhancements of” content, no matter the content provider or where or how it’s seen, create the percieved/real value? ie; You air “star trek” reruns, and I “air” star trek reruns, but my enhancement/accessability is faster or funnier or scarier than yours…and now the audience dictates who gets paid…and all of a sudden your advertisers want the “cool” version, (because that’s whats being watched) you provide my/enhanced reruns, and without compromising bandwith or realestate, my rerun gets the increased exposure and accompaning revenue. dare I say viral broadcasting?…
And that vision has not been expressed in any press re; OWN. I’de like to hear your thoughts on this.
