Baroque is a good phrase metaphor, but it sounds like late stage Rococo. The CES seemed like a bloated mess three years ago and it sounds like the bloat has grown. Comdex is a good analogy.

You are right, the consumers will wait, as these companies have trained them to, waiting for the price to drop, creating more commodity.

I did not see much in the way of compelling consumer propositions. 3D TV looked cool, but there is a big open question about who the consumer is, and whether they will wear goggles, and how much content is available.

This shotgun approach (aka "Spray and pray") could generate some cool unexpected products, but most of what was on display was derivative, not innovative: Kindle clones, iPhone clones, App Store clones, etc.

That's a strong indication that these products are not driven by consumer desire but rather by industry capabilty.

I like what you're getting at- which is 'what' the point. Just because you CAN do something does not mean you should. Just because it's possible doesn't mean it's required. The average consumer is already bewildered and with a surfeit of unnecessary upgrades they will only sit on the sidelines while their ability to digest what is being offered to them catches up to what the industries seeking to cater to them are producing willy-nilly.
